KIYOHIME JAPANESE MAPLE
Acer palmatum 'Kiyohime' is a renowned dwarf Japanese Maple favored for its unique spreading, mounded habit and exceptional spring color. Unlike many upright maples, 'Kiyohime' grows horizontally, typically reaching only 2-3 feet tall with a 4-5 foot spread, giving it a dense, "mushroom-like" appearance. In early spring, the small, five-lobed leaves emerge bright chartreuse-green with a distinct, vivid purple-red border on each leaf tip. As summer arrives, the foliage transitions to a solid, rich emerald green. In fall the foliage warms to yellow, oranges and deep reds. Its naturally compact growth makes it one of the most popular varieties for bonsai culture and rock gardens.
Kiyohime Japanese Maple thrives in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade. It is notably more heat-tolerant than many other Japanese Maples, but its delicate leaves can still scorch if exposed to intense, direct mid-day sun in hotter climates. It requires well-drained, humus-rich soil that is kept consistently moist, but never waterlogged. It is ideal for low-profile foundation plantings under windows, as its slow horizontal growth ensures it will not grow tall enough to block sunlight or views from inside the home.
