HANA MATOI JAPANESE MAPLE
Acer palmatum 'Hana Matoi' is a rare variegated laceleaf Japanese Maple that is often described as "adorned with flowers' due to its spectacular coloration. This dwarf cultivar features a graceful, weeping habit, typically reaching only 6-7 feet tall with a 4-5 foot spread. Its finely dissected, feathery leaves emerge in spring with a vibrant explosion of pink, creamy white, and green; some leaves may even appear entirely pink. As summer progresses, the colors soften but maintain their distinct variegation, culminating in a brilliant, fiery scarlet-red display in the fall. Because of its slow growth and mounding form, it is highly prized as a 'living sculpture' in small gardens or as a high-end container specimen.
To preserve the delicate variegation and prevent leaf scorch, 'Hana Matoi' should be planted in a location with dappled shade or morning sun followed by afternoon protection. While it can tolerate more sun in cooler northern climates, which often intensifies the pink hues, intense afternoon heat in the south will cause the variegated edges to crisp. It enjoys rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and requires consistent moisture. It is particularly sensitive to drying out, so a thick layer of organic mulch is essential to keep the roots cool and damp.
