BABY LACE JAPANESE MAPLE

Acer palmatum 'Baby Lace' is a landmark cultivar in the world of horticulture, recognized as the very first "witches' broom" ever discovered on a laceleaf (dissectum) Japanese Maple. Found in the early 1980s, this natural mutation resulted in an exceptionally compact, mounded form with incredibly short internodes, creating a "micro-lace" texture that sets it apart from larger dissected varieties. The foliage emerges in spring with a delicate orange-red tint before maturing to a bright mint green with reddish margins. Because of its unique origin as a broom, it maintains a dense, congested habit that makes it a prized specimen for rock gardens, small landscapes, and sophisticated container displays.

'Baby Lace' Japanese Maple thrives in a sheltered spot that offers dappled sunlight or afternoon shade, as its fine, thread-like leaves can be sensitive to leaf scorch in intense, direct sun. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil that remains consistently moist; applying a layer of organic mulch is highly recommended to help regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. In fall, the dense canopy puts on a brilliant finale of fiery orange and gold. Given its slow growth rate and naturally refined architecture, very little pruning is necessary beyond the occasional removal of dead wood in late winter to maintain its intricate silhouette.
