RISING SUN FULL MOON MAPLE
Acer japonicum 'Rising Sun' is a magnificent cultivar of the Full Moon Maple, celebrated for its exceptionally large, heavily textured leaves that can reach up to 8 inches in width. These dinner-plate-sized leaves give the tree a lush, almost tropical appearance that stands out in temperate gardens. In early spring, the branches are often adorned with small, purplish-red tassel-like flowers just as the medium-green foliage begins to unfurl. 'Rising Sun' puts on a spectacular fall display of brilliant scarlet, orange, and golden-yellow hues, often appearing on the tree simultaneously for a multi-tonal effect. It typically grows into a broad, upright, multi-stemmed small tree, reaching 20 feet in height at maturity.
'Rising Sun' Full Moon Maple is a hardy and vigorous grower that thrives in morning sun with added protection from the harsh, direct afternoon rays which can cause the large leaf margins to scorch or curl. Like most Japanese maples, it requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil that is rich in organic matter; it is particularly sensitive to "wet feet," so avoid planting it in areas where water tends to pool. While it is moderately drought-tolerant once its root system is established, it benefits from consistent moisture and a thick layer of mulch to keep the roots cool during the heat of summer.
