SHORT N SWEET™ MERLOT SWEETSPIRE

Itea virginica 'Merlot' is commonly referred to as Short N' Sweet™ Merlot Sweetspire. This native deciduous shrub features a very compact habit and fragrant white flowers in June attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The leaves turn a beautiful burgundy color in fall and its winter branches are quite colorful.

Merlot Sweetspire is part of the Short N' Sweet™ series. It is deer resistant and thrives in full to partial shade in rich, moist soils. It will tolerate a wet site and even clay soil. It is ideal for erosion control, rain gardens and any spot that stays moist.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, well-draining soil, although this species is remarkably adaptable and tolerates wet sites or heavy clay better than most. Select a location in full sun to partial shade, noting that maximum sun exposure is required for the most prolific flower production and the most intense crimson-purple autumn leaf color. Establishment requires consistent moisture during the first season to ensure the root system develops properly. Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape or encourage density, as this species blooms on old wood.
