Zone: 4SWEET KATE SPIDERWORT
Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate' is a vibrant, clump-forming perennial prized for its intense, golden-yellow foliage that acts as a stunning beacon in the garden. Unlike many of its counterparts with darker green leaves, 'Sweet Kate' creates a brilliant contrast in a border, especially when paired with plants that have darker or cooler foliage colors. In late spring and throughout the summer, it produces clusters of striking, deep blue-purple flowers with bright yellow stamens that stand out clearly against the chartreuse backdrop. Its upright-to-arching habit gives it a tidy, grassy texture that remains a highlight even when not in full bloom.
As a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 4-9, 'Sweet Kate' will return reliably each year. It performs best in a spot with full sun to part shade; while it loves the sun, it may appreciate a bit of afternoon shade in the hottest climates to prevent the foliage from scorching. It thrives in average-to-moist, well-drained soil and is quite adaptable to various conditions. To maintain its neat appearance and encourage a fresh flush of foliage and flowers, simply cut the plant back by about half once the initial bloom cycle begins to fade.
