Zone: 5INDIAN PINK
Spigelia marilandica, commonly known as Indian Pink, is one of the most striking native perennials available for the landscape. It forms an upright, clump-matching habit of lance-shaped, forest-green leaves that reach a mature height of 15 - 18 inches. In late spring to early summer, it produces distinct, trumpet-shaped flowers that are a brilliant scarlet-red on the exterior, opening at the top to reveal a contrasting bright yellow, five-pointed star. This dramatic color combination is a natural beacon for hummingbirds, making it a premier choice for any pollinator-focused garden or woodland border.
While Spigelia marilandica is traditionally found in shaded woodlands, it is surprisingly adaptable and can thrive in locations ranging from full shade to full sun. When planted in a full-sun site in Ohio, it tends to develop a tighter, more floriferous habit, provided the soil remains consistently moist. It performs best in rich, organic, well-drained soil and is notably slow to emerge in the spring, so patience is key as the soil warms up. Once established, it is a long-lived and dependable performer in USDA Zones 5 - 9. Maintenance is very low; simply remove spent flower stems to maintain a tidy appearance and cut the foliage back to the ground in late autumn or early spring.
