BLUE-EYED GRASS
Sisyrinchium angustifolium 'Lucerne' is a charming and versatile perennial that combines the delicate look of an ornamental grass with the bright, cheery blooms of a wildflower. Commonly known as Blue-Eyed Grass, this cultivar forms a tidy, upright tuft of narrow, sword-shaped foliage that reaches a mature height of 9 - 12 inches. In late spring and early summer, it is covered in a profusion of star-shaped, deep violet-blue flowers, each featuring a distinct yellow "eye" at the center. Despite its dainty appearance, 'Lucerne' is a robust performer that provides a refined, grassy texture to the front of borders, rock gardens, or woodland edges.
To keep Blue-Eyed Grass thriving, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. While it is quite adaptable, it performs best in moist, well-drained soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely during the heat of summer. Maintenance is minimal; once the main blooming period has ended, you can lightly shear the foliage to keep the tufts looking neat and fresh for the remainder of the season. Its compact size and uniform habit make it an excellent choice for planting in large drifts or as a sophisticated "filler" in mixed perennial containers.
