MATRONA STONECROP
Sedum 'Matrona' is a classic, award-winning upright stonecrop that brings a strong architectural presence to the late-season garden. It is distinguished by its massive, succulent leaves in a sophisticated shade of gray-green, which are often flushed with a deep burgundy tint. Reaching a sturdy height of 18 to 24 inches, it is supported by thick, ruby-red stems that remain upright throughout the growing season. In late summer and early autumn, 'Matrona' is topped with exceptionally large, flattened flower clusters in a soft, pale pink that matures into a warm bronze-red as the temperatures cool.
For the best results, plant Sedum 'Matrona' in a location that receives full sun, which ensures the stems remain strong and the foliage maintains its deep, smoky coloration. It is a rugged and adaptable perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; avoiding overly fertile soil is important, as too many nutrients can lead to "flopping" in taller varieties.
In the landscape, it is an ideal choice for the middle or back of a sunny border, as a dramatic mass planting, or as a reliable specimen in rock gardens. Maintenance is simple - leave the dried seed heads to provide winter interest and a food source for birds, then cut the stems back to the ground in early spring before new growth emerges.
