Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Jean Baby' is a standout dwarf Russian Sage that solves the common "flopping" problem of taller varieties. This compact powerhouse forms a dense, upright mound of fragrant, silvery-grey foliage that provides a lacy, sophisticated texture even when not in bloom. Starting in mid-summer and lasting well into fall, it erupts with clouds of tiny, lavender-blue tubular flowers held in dark smoky-purple calyxes. 'Blue Jean Baby' is one of the earliest Russian Sages to bloom, acting as a massive magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds for months on end.
Reaching a manageable height of only 30 to 36 inches, 'Blue Jean Baby' is perfectly scaled for smaller gardens, mid-border placements, or even large containers. It is remarkably heat, drought, and salt tolerant, making it a "bulletproof" choice for sunny, water-wise landscapes or coastal gardens. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, it thrives in lean, fast-draining soil and actually performs better in poor soil than in rich, heavily fertilized beds. Because its stems are woody and its foliage is highly aromatic, it is virtually deer and rabbit resistant, providing a reliable, low-maintenance wash of cool blue color all season long.
