Zone: 4ITOH BARTZELLA TREE PEONY
Paeonia 'Bartzella' is a horticultural masterpiece and arguably the most famous of the Itoh Hybrids (a cross between a woody tree peony and an herbaceous peony). This award-winning plant offers the best of both worlds: the massive, exotic flowers of a tree peony and the easy-to-manage, cold-hardy growth habit of a traditional herbaceous peony. In late spring to early summer, it produces spectacular, giant double blooms, often reaching 6 to 8 inches across, in a brilliant primrose-yellow with soft red or burgundy flares at the center. Unlike most yellow peonies, 'Bartzella' is known for its incredibly spicy, lemon-like fragrance and its ability to produce up to 50 to 80 blooms on a single mature plant over a several-week period.
To get the most out of 'Bartzella', it should be planted in full sun to partial shade. While it loves the sun, its flowers tend to last longer if they have a little protection from the intense afternoon heat. It reaches a sturdy, mounded height of about 3 feet and, unlike many heavy-headed peonies, it features exceptionally strong stems that almost never require staking. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil and is famously vigorous, often growing faster and resisting disease (like peony blight) better than its traditional cousins.
