Zone: 3FESTIVA MAXIMA PEONY
Paeonia 'Festiva Maxima' is a legendary French heirloom that has reigned as one of the most popular white peonies since its introduction in 1851. This mid-season bloomer is famous for its massive, rose-shaped double flowers that open in a pristine, snowy white with occasional, dramatic flecks of crimson-red on the center petals. Beyond its striking appearance, it is beloved for its intoxicatingly sweet fragrance, which is often considered the benchmark for traditional peony scents. Reaching a height of 30 to 36 inches, it produces exceptionally large blooms that can measure up to 7 inches across, held above a lush mound of deep green, divided foliage that remains a handsome garden staple throughout the summer.
To ensure 'Festiva Maxima' thrives, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are necessary to support its heavy floral production. It performs best in deep, fertile, and well-drained soil; like most peonies, it will struggle in heavy clay that stays waterlogged, which can lead to crown rot. When planting, it is critical to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, as deeper planting is the most common reason for a failure to bloom.
