Zone: 3SUPERBA PEONY
Paeonia 'Edulis Superba' is a time-honored, fragrant, heirloom herbaceous peony that has remained a favorite in gardens since its introduction in 1824. Known for its intense, spicy fragrance that can perfume an entire yard, this early-to-midseason bloomer produces large, crown-type double flowers in a vibrant, deep rose-pink with a collar of smaller, silvery-pink petals at the base. The blooms are exceptionally ruffled and lush, held atop a vigorous mound of divided, dark green foliage that stays attractive throughout the summer months. Reaching a height of approximately 24 to 36 inches, it is widely considered one of the best varieties for cut flower arrangements due to its reliable stem strength and nostalgic, old-fashioned scent.
To ensure 'Edulis Superba' thrives for decades, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are required to produce its heavy crop of fragrant blossoms. It prefers deep, fertile, and well-drained soil with a neutral pH; like most peonies, it will struggle in heavy clay that retains too much moisture during the winter. When planting, it is vital to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, as planting them too deep is the most common reason for a lack of flowers.
