Zone: 3BLUE WONDER CATMINT
Nepeta mussinii 'Blue Wonder' is a classic, award-winning selection of Persian Catmint celebrated for its exceptionally large, dense flower spikes. Unlike many of its wispier cousins, 'Blue Wonder' produces thick, 6-inch-long racemes of deep lavender-blue blossoms that create a substantial carpet of color starting in late spring. It reaches a tidy height of 18 to 24 inches and maintains a spreading, mounded habit with small, scalloped, gray-green leaves that are highly aromatic. This fragrance is a double-edged sword: it is irresistibly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies, yet it acts as a natural deterrent for deer and rabbits, making it a reliable "problem-solver" for exposed garden beds.
The ideal spot for 'Blue Wonder' is in full sun with sharply drained soil, as it is particularly sensitive to "wet feet" during the winter months. It is an incredibly drought-tolerant perennial once established, thriving in sandy or rocky soils where other plants might struggle. For the best care, shear the entire plant back by about two-thirds after the initial heavy flush of blooms fades; this prevents the center from becoming "leggy" and stimulates a fresh, silvery carpet of foliage followed by a second wave of blue flowers in late summer.
