LAVANDULA ANG MUNSTEAD
Grower Notes:
Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' is more commonly known as Munstead Lavender. It is a beloved, exceptionally hardy variety of English lavender, famous for being one of the earliest to flower, typically beginning its long blooming season in late spring to early summer. It forms a dense, semi-woody shrub, maturing to a compact size of about 18-24 inches in both height and spread, making it ideal for low hedges, edging paths, or containers. The flowers are a bright, cool lavender-blue and are intensely fragrant, making 'Munstead' a favorite for culinary use, sachets, and potpourris, in addition to its ornamental value. Its aromatic, silvery-gray-green foliage provides year-round interest and is notably attractive to pollinators while being deer and rabbit resistant.
'Munstead' Lavender thrives in full sun (at least six hours daily) and perfect drainage. Plant it in poor to average, well-draining, sandy, or gravelly soil, as it thrives in lean conditions and will suffer from root rot in heavy, wet ground. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly; overwatering is the main reason these plants fail. Pruning should be done lightly in early spring to maintain its tidy, mounded shape, and spent flowers should be deadheaded to encourage a second flush of blooms, but you should never cut into the old, woody base of the plant.
