Zone: 5MARS MIDGET SCABIOSA
Knautia macedonica 'Mars Midget', commonly known as Macedonian Scabious or Mars Midget Pincushion Flower, is a compact and floriferous perennial prized for its intensely rich, ruby-red to deep crimson flowers. It is a dwarf form of the species, growing to a manageable height of 15-18 inches with an equivalent spread, making it for the front of borders, rock gardens, or containers. From early summer right through to the first frost, it produces a continuous succession of 2 inch domed, scabiosa-like flower heads atop thin, wiry stems that gently sway in the breeze. The stunning, deep red color and delicate texture of the blooms provide fantastic contrast, attracting an array of pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds.
Mars Midget Knautia performs best in full sun and planted in average, well-drained soil, preferably one that is neutral to slightly alkaline. For a prolonged season of vibrant color, deadheading spent flowers is highly recommended.
