Zone: 9VARIEGATED GINGER
Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated Shell Ginger, is a striking tropical perennial prized for its bold, luminous foliage. The wide, lance-shaped leaves are characterized by a sophisticated pattern of irregular yellow and cream stripes against a deep green backdrop. Growing in arching, cane-like clumps that typically reach 5 to 6 feet in height, Variegated Ginger adds a vertical element and a splash of bright color to landscapes. When mature, it produces pendulous clusters of white, porcelain-like flower buds that open to reveal yellow throats with red markings, closely resembling small sea shells.
To maintain the vibrant variegation and prevent leaf scorch, Variegated Ginger thrives best in a spot with partial shade or filtered sunlight; too much deep shade can cause the yellow patterns to fade back to solid green. It requires rich, fertile soil that is kept consistently moist, as it does not tolerate drought well. Because its large leaves are susceptible to drying out and tattering, a humid location sheltered from strong winds is ideal for preserving its ornamental appearance. In many regions, it is used as a high-impact container plant or a lush hedge, and it should be cut back to the ground if damaged by frost, as it often resprouts from its thick rhizomes in the spring.
