BLUE WHISKERS BLUE FESCUE GRASS
Festuca glauca 'Blue Whiskers' is a high-performance Blue Fescue cultivar known for being slightly larger and more robust than the classic 'Elijah Blue'. This cool-season ornamental grass forms a dense, rounded mound of exceptionally fine, needle-like foliage that reaches about 9 to 12 inches tall and up to 30 inches wide. It is prized for its intense, bright silvery-blue color that remains vivid even through the heat of summer. In early summer, it produces delicate, light green flower spikes on tall stems that mature to a golden-tan, adding a soft, airy texture that floats above the architectural, spiky blue "pincushion" of the main plant.
Caring for 'Blue Whiskers' is incredibly easy, as it is a rugged, drought-tolerant plant that thrives in "tough" garden spots. It performs best in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its signature metallic blue hue; in too much shade, the color will fade to a duller green. This grass requires sharply drained soil and actually prefers leaner, sandy, or rocky ground over rich, heavy soils.

To help Festuca settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in lean, sharply well-draining soil. Festuca varieties are cool-season, clumping grasses that are highly sensitive to soil moisture; avoid heavy, wet, or overly rich garden soils, as these will cause the crown to rot. Excellent drainage is essential to maintaining their signature blue foliage color. In early spring, use a hand rake to gently 'comb' out dead foliage from the clumps. Avoid cutting them to the ground like larger grasses, as they do not regenerate well from hard pruning.
