Zone: 5TOKYO WOOD FERN
Dryopteris tokyoensis, commonly known as the Tokyo Wood Fern, is an elegant, distinctly vertical fern that brings a sense of refined structure to the shade garden. Native to Japan, Korea, and China, it is prized for its remarkably upright and narrow habit. Unlike many ferns that arch or weep, the Tokyo Wood Fern sends its deep green, pinnate fronds straight toward the sky in a formal, vase-shaped arrangement. This narrow profile makes it a "secret weapon" for tight spaces or for adding vertical lines among lower, mounding shade plants like hellebores or tiarellas.
Tokyo Wood Fern is a reliable performer and relatively easy to integrate into a variety of landscape designs. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers consistently moist, rich, and well-drained soil. While it enjoys a damp environment, it is quite sturdy once established and can tolerate a range of soil conditions as long as it doesn't dry out completely for extended periods.
Because of its stiffly upright growth, it is less likely to be flattened by heavy rains compared to more delicate species. It is a deciduous fern, so it will go dormant in the winter, but its bright green color remains vibrant right up until the first hard frost. For the best results, plant it in a spot sheltered from strong winds to maintain its perfectly vertical form and apply a layer of organic mulch to keep the roots cool and moist.

To help Dryopteris settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Dryopteris prefer consistent moisture but require good drainage to prevent crown rot; unlike bog-loving ferns, they will not tolerate long periods of standing water. Mulch with organic matter to keep roots cool and retain moisture.
