APPLE COURT JAPANESE PAINTED FERN

Athyrium niponicum 'Apple Court' is a sophisticated and highly ornamental variety of the Japanese Painted Fern that combines two of the most desirable traits in the genus: vibrant color and intricate texture. It features the classic silvery-green fronds and contrasting deep burgundy-red midribs, but with the added distinction of being "crested." The tips of the fronds and the side pinnae are elegantly branched and tasseled, giving the plant a lush, full, and slightly ruffled appearance. This double-feature of color and cresting makes it a top-tier choice for gardeners who want a standout specimen for a detailed shade planting.

To keep 'Apple Court' performing well, it should be situated in partial to full shade. While a touch of gentle morning light can help intensify the metallic silver and red tones, the crested tips are particularly sensitive to drying out in direct afternoon sun. It requires moist, fertile, and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter like compost or leaf mold. Consistent moisture is the key to maintaining its ornate form; if the soil stays too dry, the intricate fringes may begin to brown and curl. A sheltered location away from heavy foot traffic or strong winds will help protect its delicate, heavy fronds, ensuring this "painterly" fern remains a centerpiece of the woodland garden.

Planting Tips

To help Athyrium settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Athyrium thrive in consistent moisture and require good drainage to prevent the crown from rotting in heavy, compacted clays. Provide a location with partial to full shade - consistent shade helps protect the delicate fronds from scorching. Mulch around the base to keep the root zone cool and retain moisture.
