VIKING BLACK CHOKEBERRY
Aronia melanocarpa 'Viking' is commonly referred to as the Viking Black Chokeberry. It is an upright, spreading, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with brilliant reddish-purple fall color. Clusters of white flowers appear in spring (earlier than other cultivars) followed by edible black fruit which attracts wildlife.
Viking Black Chokeberry enjoys full to part sun in evenly moist, well-drained soils. For best fruit production, plant in full sun.
The fruits of Aronia melanocarpa varieties (Aronia berries) have been found to be very beneficial to human health, including anti-diabetic, anti-infective, anti-obesity, and antioxidant activities, as well as for your heart and liver function.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, well-draining soil, although this species is remarkably adaptable and tolerates wet sites or compacted soil better than most shrubs. Select a location with full sun to partial shade, noting that maximum sun exposure is required for the most prolific fruit production and intense autumn leaf color. Establishment is straightforward, but consistent watering during the first season ensures the root system develops properly. Because Aronia has a natural suckering habit, prune in late winter or early spring to manage size or remove old canes if a more formal appearance is desired.
