CHOCOLATE CHIP BUGLEWEED

Ajuga reptans 'Chocolate Chip', also known as Valfredda, is a charming and versatile dwarf groundcover that is highly valued for its petite foliage and rugged nature. Unlike the broader leaves of standard Bugleweed, 'Chocolate Chip' features narrow, elongated leaves in a rich shade of dark chocolate-brown to deep mahogany. It forms a very low, dense mat that stands only 3 to 6 inches tall, making it a perfect choice for planting between stepping stones, as a front-of-border filler, or as a vibrant "living mulch" beneath taller shrubs.

In mid-to-late spring, the dark foliage is topped with a prolific display of upright, 4-inch spikes of bright violet-blue flowers. This striking color contrast creates a stunning visual carpet that is particularly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies. 'Chocolate Chip' is remarkably easy to grow, thriving in full sun to partial shade and adapting to a wide range of soil conditions, provided they are well-drained. It is also notably more resistant to crown rot than larger-leafed varieties, making it a dependable, low-maintenance solution for suppressing weeds and adding deep, moody color to the landscape.

Planting Tips

To help Ajuga settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, well-draining soil with an exposure of partial shade to full shade - many varieties often perform best with some protection from intense afternoon sun. While Ajuga is a vigorous, mat-forming spreader, it requires good air circulation; avoid planting in low-lying areas where water pools, as this can lead to crown rot. Water regularly to establish, though it is moderately drought-tolerant once mature.
