AUTUMN JOY STONECROP
Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy' is a quintessential garden staple, celebrated for its ironclad reliability and multi-season interest. This upright sedum features thick, succulent, gray-green leaves that form a tidy, mounded habit reaching 15 to 18 inches in height. In late summer, it produces large, flattened flower clusters that resemble heads of broccoli. These buds open into a soft, dusty pink and gradually deepen to a rich, coppery-bronze by autumn, providing one of the most iconic color transitions in the late-season landscape.
For the best performance and strongest stems, plant Sedum 'Autumn Joy' in a location that receives full sun. It is a rugged, drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; avoiding over-fertilization is key to preventing the stems from becoming too lush and potentially flopping.
In the landscape, it is an ideal choice for the middle of a sunny border, as a reliable mass planting, or as a structural element in a pollinator garden. Maintenance is minimal-leave the dried flower heads throughout the winter for architectural interest and as a food source for birds, then cut the stems back to the ground in early spring before the new growth appears.
