RED PYGMY® FLOWERING DOGWOOD

Cornus florida Red Pygmy® is a breakthrough in flowering dogwood breeding, offering the classic beauty of the native species in a remarkably compact, genetic dwarf form. It is celebrated for its oversized, deep rosy-red bracts that smother the branches in late spring, creating a vivid floral display that rivals much larger trees. Despite its small stature which typically reaches just 6-7 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width, it maintains a dense, rounded habit with lush green foliage that turns a spectacular burgundy red fall. This cultivar is an ideal choice for small urban gardens, large containers, or as a vibrant accent in a foundation planting where space is at a premium.

Red Pygmy® Dogwood thrives in morning sun and filtered afternoon shade, as harsh midday sun can scorch its delicate foliage. It thrives in rich, acidic, and well-drained soil that is consistently moist; dogwoods are notoriously sensitive to drought, so they should never be allowed to dry out completely.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with a balanced fertilizer. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
