NANTUCKET BLUE™ BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea macrophylla 'GRENAN' is commonly known as Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea. This fantastic, repeat-blooming selection features blooms on new growth throughout its growing season, blooming from early summer to early fall. Flowers are bold with lavender overtones in low pH (acidic) soils and shades of purple to red in higher pH (alkaline) soils. Dense, serrated dark green foliage provides a nice background and turns a nice burgundy red in fall.

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea thrives in partial sun and partial shade in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. This selection reblooms on the current year's growth as well as new growth (both new and old wood). Therefore, it is beneficial to prune immediately after flowering to control size and growth. And don't worry if a late freeze nips the flower buds on the old wood, you still have the current year's growth!

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining, rich soil protected from the hot afternoon sun. For pink and blue Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, bloom color is pH-dependent; keep soil slightly acidic for blue tones or adjust toward neutral for pink. White varieties remain stable regardless of pH. Water consistently to maintain soil moisture, as this variety is sensitive to drying out. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and moist.
