FRENCH PUSSY WILLOW
Salix caprea is commonly known as the Pussy Willow or Goat Willow. It is a large shrub or small, deciduous tree that features showy hairless, chestnut brown branches with attractive catkins before spring leaves emerge. Males have gray and wooly catkins and females produce smaller, greener catkins. This is followed by broad, green, elliptic leaves in summer which turn a greenish yellow in fall.
The Pussy Willow is native to wet areas in Eastern US and enjoys full sun and rich, moist soils along streams, ponds, or lower areas in the landscape. It is usually Spring's first flowering plant and its attractive branches are in high demand for cut arrangements.
