ICE DANCE VARIEGATED SEDGE GRASS

Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance', commonly known as Ice Dance Sedge, is a vigorous and elegant evergreen perennial prized for its crisp, clean variegation. It forms a dense, arching mound of leathery, wide blades, each featuring a dark green center framed by bright creamy-white margins. Reaching a height and spread of approximately 12 to 15 inches, it is slightly more robust and spreading than other variegated sedges, thanks to its slow-creeping rhizomes. This makes it an exceptional choice for a low-maintenance groundcover that can brighten up the dark floor of a woodland garden or add a sophisticated, cooling texture to the edges of shaded pathways and containers.

Caring for 'Ice Dance' is remarkably easy, as it is one of the toughest and most adaptable sedges available for the landscape. It thrives in partial to full shade and, while it prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil, it is surprisingly tolerant of dry shade once it has established a strong root system. Unlike many other variegated plants, it holds its white-and-green contrast well even in deeper shade and is generally resistant to deer and most pests. Because it is evergreen, you should avoid cutting the entire plant back to the ground; instead, simply "comb" out any dead blades or lightly trim the tips in early spring if they have become tattered or browned by harsh winter winds.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune dead or damaged foliage to maintain appearance.
