JUDDII SELECT FRAGRANT VIBURNUM

Viburnum x juddii 'Select' is an improved cultivar of the beloved Juddi Viburnum, prized for its exceptionally heady, spicy-sweet fragrance that perfumes the entire garden in mid-to-late spring. It produces dense, rounded clusters of pink-tinged buds that open into snowy white, waxy flowers, creating a striking contrast against its leathery, dark green semi-glossy foliage. It maintains a superior, densely branched, and rounded habit, typically reaching a manageable height and spread of 6 to 7 feet. Beyond its spring appeal, 'Select' Viburnum offers multi-seasonal interest with clean summer foliage that transitions into rich shades of burgundy and dull red in the autumn, followed by small black fruits that attract local songbirds.

For the most profuse blooming and intense fragrance, the ideal spot for a Viburnum 'Select' is a location in full sun to partial shade with well-draining, loamy soil. While it is notably more resistant to bacterial leaf spot than many other fragrant viburnums, it performs best when given plenty of air circulation and consistent moisture. It is highly adaptable to various soil pH levels but thrives in neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Because it blooms on old wood, any necessary pruning to shape the shrub or remove wayward branches should be done immediately after the spring flowering cycle concludes to avoid sacrificing next year's fragrant display.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with full sun to partial shade. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth.
