WOOD POPPY
Stylophorum diphyllum, commonly known as the Celandine Poppy or Wood Poppy, is a standout native perennial for woodland gardens. It is prized for its brilliant, four-petaled yellow flowers that appear in early to mid-spring, creating a vivid contrast against its deeply lobed, blue-green foliage. Reaching about 12 to 15 inches in height, Wood Poppy often naturalizes beautifully in the right conditions. A distinctive feature is the silver-haired, nodding seed pods that follow the blooms, as well as the bright yellow-orange sap found within its stems.
Stylophorum disphyllum (Wood Poppy) thrives in part shade and prefers moist, humus-rich soil, mimicking its natural habitat in deciduous forests. It is an excellent choice for naturalizing under a high tree canopy or in a dedicated shade border where it can spread via self-seeding. While its foliage remains attractive through spring, it may go dormant in the heat of summer if the soil becomes too dry; providing consistent moisture will help maintain its presence later into the season. It pairs exceptionally well with other spring natives like Mertensia virginica (Virginia Bluebells) or Trillium, offering a cheerful pop of color in the cooler, dimmer corners of the landscape.
