LITTLE HENRY BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia subtomentosa 'Little Henry' is a unique and structurally captivating cultivar of the Sweet Coneflower, discovered as a compact sport of the popular 'Henry Eilers'. It is instantly recognizable by its distinct, quilled petals - each bright golden-yellow ray is rolled into a fine tube, giving the flower a delicate, starburst appearance. These unusual flowers surround a chocolate-brown central disk and emit a subtle, sweet fragrance reminiscent of vanilla or anise when the foliage is brushed. Reaching a mature height of 24 to 30 inches, 'Little Henry' offers a more manageable, sturdier alternative to its taller predecessor, maintaining an upright, non-flopping habit that adds sophisticated texture to the middle or back of a perennial border.
For peak performance, 'Little Henry' should be situated in full sun, though it is more tolerant of light afternoon shade than many other Rudbeckia species. It thrives in average to moist, well-drained soil and is particularly valued for its adaptability; it can handle the humidity of the Midwest and South as well as periods of drought once its root system is fully established. Unlike the shorter-lived hirta types, this is a long-lived, dependable perennial that provides a consistent vertical element in the landscape from late summer through early autumn. Leaving the sturdy stems and seed heads intact through the winter serves as a vital food source for goldfinches and other songbirds.
