LITTLE GOLDSTAR DWARF BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Little Goldstar' is a premier, compact alternative to the traditional 'Goldsturm'. This breakthrough cultivar is prized for its tidy, uniform habit, reaching a manageable height of only 12 to 15 inches. Unlike many hirta varieties, 'Little Goldstar' is a true herbaceous perennial that is exceptionally well-branched, allowing a single plant to produce upwards of 80 blooms in a single season. Its flowers are classic Black-Eyed Susans - star-shaped, brilliant golden-yellow rays surrounding a prominent nearly-black central cone - but they are held on shorter, sturdier stems that remain upright without the need for staking. It is a fantastic choice for the front of a border, mass plantings, or high-end mixed containers where a refined, low-maintenance look is required.
To ensure the best landscape performance, 'Little Goldstar' should be planted in a location that receives full sun, though it is remarkably tolerant of light afternoon shade in hotter climates. It thrives in average, well-drained soil and is notably adaptable to various soil types, including those with higher clay content. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture will keep the foliage lush and the flower production at its peak from mid-summer through early autumn. Because it is a fulgida variety, it offers excellent resistance to Septoria leaf spot, which can sometimes plague other Rudbeckias.
