Zone: 4RED GARDEN PHLOX
Phlox paniculata Early Start Red™ is a standout for its early-season performance, typically beginning its bloom cycle several weeks before traditional tall garden phlox. It produces large, vibrant clusters of rich, crimson-red flowers that offer a sweet fragrance and act as a significant draw for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Reaching a compact and manageable height of about 15 to 18 inches, it forms a dense, upright mound of dark green foliage that provides a sturdy and attractive base for the intense floral display throughout the early summer months.
The ideal spot for Early Start Red™ is a sunny location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure the most brilliant color and strongest stems. It flourishes in fertile, well-drained soil that is kept consistently moist; applying a layer of organic mulch around the base is highly beneficial for moisture retention and root cooling. To keep the plant healthy, provide adequate spacing to allow for good air circulation, which helps prevent powdery mildew. Removing spent flower panicles will not only maintain a tidy appearance but can also stimulate the plant to produce a secondary flush of red blooms later in the season.
