RED ROCKS™ BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon Red Rocks™ (a hybrid of P. x mexicali) is a high-performance perennial cherished for its brilliant color and resilient nature. It forms a tidy mound of narrow, glossy, dark green foliage that stays attractive throughout the growing season. In early summer, it erupts with spikes of tubular, rose-pink to cranberry-red flowers with clear white throats. These "foxglove-like" blooms are not just a visual treat; they are a primary destination for hummingbirds and butterflies, often blooming in waves from June until the first frost if the spent stalks are removed.
Reaching a compact height of 15 to 18 inches, Red Rocks™ is an ideal choice for the front of a sunny border, rock gardens, or xeriscapes. It is celebrated for its exceptional heat and drought tolerance, thriving in the intense sun and lean soils where other perennials might wilt. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, it requires excellent drainage to survive the winter, as it cannot tolerate soggy soil. This "tough-as-nails" perennial is also notably deer and rabbit resistant, making it a reliable, low-maintenance workhorse for sunny, water-wise landscapes.
