STRIPED MAIDEN GRASS
Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus', often simply called Variegated Japanese Silver Grass, is a classic and luminous cultivar known for its bright, creamy-white longitudinal stripes. Unlike the 'Morning Light' variety which has thin white edges, 'Variegatus' has much broader white bands, making it appear more white than green from a distance. It forms a lush, slightly more relaxed and arching mound that typically reaches 5 to 6 feet tall. In late summer, it produces delicate, reddish-tinted flower plumes that gracefully transition to a soft, creamy tan as they dry, providing beautiful movement and light to the late-season garden.
Caring for 'Variegatus' is very straightforward, though its higher white-to-green ratio makes it slightly more sensitive to extreme conditions than solid green varieties. It performs best in full sun, which ensures the stems stay strong; however, in very hot southern climates, it actually appreciates some light afternoon shade to prevent the white portions of the leaves from scorching. It is drought-tolerant once established and grows well in a variety of soils, provided they are well-drained. Because it is a deciduous grass, it will turn a pale, papery tan in winter. Maintenance is a simple once-a-year task: in late winter or very early spring, cut the entire clump back to about 6-8 inches from the ground to allow the bright new variegated blades to emerge.

To help Miscanthus sinensis types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. For best performance and full plume production, ensure they receive ample sunlight; shade may lead to flopping or reduced flowering. They are adaptable to a variety of soil types and become quite drought-tolerant once established. These grasses are vigorous, clump-forming growers, so provide adequate spacing at planting to accommodate their mature size. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant for the upcoming season.
