CABARET JAPANESE SILVER GRASS
Miscanthus sinensis 'Cabaret' is widely considered one of the most spectacular variegated ornamental grasses available, prized for its bold, "theatrical" coloring and substantial presence. 'Cabaret' forms a massive, upright-to-arching clump of wide, ribbon-like blades that typically reaches 6 to 7 feet tall when in bloom. The foliage is truly striking. Each deep green leaf features a broad, creamy-white center stripe, making it glow from a distance even on cloudy days. In early autumn, 'Cabaret' produces large, shimmering copper-pink flower plumes that rise well above the variegated foliage, eventually maturing into soft, silvery-tan tufts that persist through the winter.
Caring for 'Cabaret' is remarkably simple, provided it is given enough space to reach its full, majestic size. It performs most brilliantly in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its strong, upright habit and ensuring a heavy flush of flowers; in too much shade, the tall stalks may "flop" or lose their crisp variegation. This grass is highly drought-tolerant once established and can handle a wide range of soil types, including heavy clay, as long as it is well-drained. Because it is a deciduous grass, it will turn a warm tan in late autumn. Maintenance is a once-a-year task: in late winter or very early spring, simply cut the entire clump back to about 6-8 inches from the ground to make way for the bold, new variegated shoots.

To help Miscanthus sinensis types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. For best performance and full plume production, ensure they receive ample sunlight; shade may lead to flopping or reduced flowering. They are adaptable to a variety of soil types and become quite drought-tolerant once established. These grasses are vigorous, clump-forming growers, so provide adequate spacing at planting to accommodate their mature size. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant for the upcoming season.
