SOUTHERN MAGNOLIA

Magnolia grandiflora, more commonly known as the Southern Magnolia, is the crowning jewel of the broadleaf evergreens. Native to the southeastern United States, this stately tree is famous for its thick, leathery leaves that feature a polished, emerald-green surface and a soft, rusty-brown "felt" underneath. In late spring and throughout the summer, it produces massive, creamy-white blossoms that can reach up to 12 inches in diameter. Its flowers are not only visually stunning but are well-known for their heavy, lemon-citrus fragrance that can perfume an entire neighborhood. Reaching heights of 50 feet in the wild, it forms a grand, pyramidal canopy that serves as a symbol of southern elegance.

Southern Magnolia is a remarkably resilient tree that thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. While it is surprisingly adaptable to different soil types, including clay, it is sensitive to "wet feet," so avoid planting it in swampy areas. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and highly resistant to urban air pollution.

Magnolia Grandiflora is ideal as a grand specimen or shade tree for large properties where its massive scale can be fully realized. Because of its dense, evergreen foliage, it is also frequently used for tall privacy screenings or a windbreak.
