GATSBY GLOW BALL® OAKLEAF HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea quercifolia Gatsby Glow Ball ('NCHQ1' PP#37,233) is an absolute game-changer specifically bred to address Oakleaf Hydrangeas' open habit. This unique, compact variety stands out with an incredibly tight, dense, and well-behaved mounded habit, reaching a more manageable 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity. In summer, it boasts massive, cone-shaped panicles packed with crisp, clean white flowers that gracefully age into a refreshing, glowing lime-green tint. The oversized, deeply lobed signature foliage stays neat and full throughout the season, eventually turning shades of red, wine and burgundy.

Gatsby Glow Ball® Hydrangea thrives in moist, average, well-draining soil and cannot tolerate frequently wet or soggy conditions. Since it blooms on old wood, regular pruning should be avoided entirely; any structural shaping or removal of deadwood should be handled immediately after flowering finishes in late summer to protect next season's buds.

The ideal spot for this dwarf cultivar is a location with full morning sun to maximize its brilliant fall color transition, followed by dappled or partial afternoon shade to shield the large leaves from heat stress.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. While adaptable to various light conditions, they perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Water regularly until established; once mature, this variety is more drought-tolerant than other hydrangeas, though it prefers consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune sparingly and only immediately after flowering to maintain shape; avoid pruning in late winter or early spring, as this will remove the following season's flower buds.
