Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice is commonly referred to as Ruby Spice Summersweet or Ruby Spice Sweet Pepperbush. It is a densely branched, deciduous shrub with serrated, glossy dark green foliage that turns glowing yellow in fall, and very fragrant rose-pink flower bottlebrush-like flower spikes that attract butterflies, bees and beneficial pollinators. Brown seed capsules follow flowers into fall and persist through winter.
Ruby Spice Summersweet enjoys full sun to part shade with acidic, moist, fertile soils. It can bloom in shade, but do not let the soil dry out. It is ideal for woodland areas, along streams and ponds and other naturalized, low-lying areas that stay moist.
