Commonly known as the spider flower, this robust annual is famous for its large, spherical, open-faced flower clusters that bloom sequentially from the bottom up on stately stems reaching 3 to 4 feet tall. The blossoms are a rich, luminous violet-purple, featuring dramatically long, delicate stamens and seedpods that flare outward, mimicking the legs of a spider.
