HEARTS DESIRE™ REDBUD

Cercis canadensis Heart's Desire™ (Cercis canadensis 'UMN7101') is a standout cultivar of the Eastern Redbud, distinguished by its exceptional cold hardiness and vibrant floral display. Developed by the University of Minnesota, Heart's Desire™ is capable of withstanding the harsh winters of USDA Zone 4, making it a reliable choice for northern gardeners where other redbuds might struggle. In early spring, before its foliage emerges, it is smothered in a profusion of lavender-pink, pea-like flowers that cling tightly to the dark bark of its branches. Following the bloom, it develops a dense canopy of classic heart-shaped leaves that transition from a rich medium green in summer to a bright, cheerful yellow in the autumn. It typically maintains a compact, rounded form, reaching a mature height of 15 feet with an equal spread.

Heart's Desire™ thrives in full sun to partial shade, though a bit of afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter southern climates. It is highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay, provided the site is well-drained; redbuds are particularly sensitive to "wet feet" and may decline quickly in standing water. Once established, Heart's Desire™ can be moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with regular deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
