SHAGBARK HICKORY

The Shagbark Hickory is a large, deciduous tree that typically grows 70-80' tall with an irregular, oval-rounded crown and can live 350+ years. Yellow-green compound leaves turn yellow to golden brown in fall. Hickory nuts are formed from female flowers and are encased in thick husks which split open in fall. The nuts are attractive to all types of wildlife.

The Shagbark Hickory's bark is very attractive. Young trees have smooth bark. As the tree ages, its bark exfoliates in long strips creating a cool shaggy look (thus the name).
