RED ZEPPELIN® SWEETSHRUB

Calycanthus floridus Red Zeppelin® is a native root of Carolina Allspice, distinguished by its exceptionally large and dramatic blooms. While the traditional species features smaller, subtle flowers, Red Zeppelin® produces massive, velvety burgundy blooms that can reach up to five inches across. The petals release a complex, heady fragrance, often described as a mix of crushed pineapple, strawberry, and spice that fills the air from late spring through early summer. Its habit is vigorous and upright, with large, glossy green leaves that provide a lush, tropical feel before turning a warm golden-yellow in fall.

Red Zeppelin® thrives in full sun to partial shade, though a bit of afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter climates to prevent leaf scorch. It enjoys rich, moist, well-draining soil but is remarkably adaptable to heavier clay or occasional wet feet once established. Because of its intoxicating scent, it is ideal for placement near patios, entryways, or bedroom windows where the fragrance can be easily enjoyed.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with an acidic fertilizer.
