TINY TOT ASTER
Aster novi belgii 'Tiny Tot' (often classified as Symphyotrichum) is a delightful dwarf perennial that brings a final burst of life to the garden as other plants begin to fade. Living up to its name, it maintains a remarkably compact and mounded habit, typically reaching only 6 to 9 inches in height. In late summer and throughout fall, it becomes completely smothered in small, daisy-like flowers featuring clear violet-blue petals surrounding bright yellow centers. Its fine, willow-like green foliage remains tidy throughout the season, providing a clean backdrop until the spectacular floral display takes over, making it a perfect choice for the front of a sunny border, containers, or edging along a walkway.
To keep 'Tiny Tot' Aster thriving and covered in blooms, it should be planted in a spot that receives full sun, which encourages a dense habit and prevents the stems from becoming leggy. It prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil and benefits from consistent watering, especially during dry spells in the summer, as drought stress can lead to "lower leaf drop" or powdery mildew. For the best floral show, it is helpful to pinch back the stems by half in early summer (before July) to promote even more branching. After the first hard frost, the stems can be cut back to the ground to prepare for fresh growth in the spring.
