Zone: MONKEY PUZZLE TREE
Araucaria araucana is commonly referred to as Monkey Puzzle Tree. This unique, slow-growing prehistoric evergreen conifer will bring a bold statement to your landscape. It has an open, symmetrical, loose pyramidal habit when young. In time it develops an umbrella-shaped habit with horizontal spreading, rope-like branches clothed in short, dark green pointed leaves, spirally arranged around its branches. It takes about 10 years to reach 20 feet in height. In roughly 20 years, female cones develop. It takes three years for the seeds to ripen and become edible, similar to large pine nuts.
Monkey Puzzle Trees are an uncommon, quite unique bold focal point that will not be overlooked. It thrives in full sun in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Requires a sheltered area protected from drying winds.
