COLUMNARE SUGAR MAPLE

Acer saccharum 'Columnare' (Columnar Sugar Maple) is a slow-growing, fastigiate cultivar valued for its narrow, upright habit and exceptional space efficiency. Reaching a mature height of 30 to 40 feet with a tight spread of only 8 feet, its strict, ascending branch structure forms a dense vertical column that easily fits into restricted suburban lot lines, narrow side yards, or commercial urban streetscapes. The dark green, three-to-five-lobed foliage stays clean throughout the summer before transitioning into showy shades of golden yellow and deep orange in autumn, delivering the classic sugar maple fall color performance within a fraction of the footprint.

Caring for 'Columnare' Sugar Maple relies on establishing a deep, healthy root system in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils in full sun. It is moderately drought-tolerant once fully established, but it benefits from consistent deep watering during hot, dry spells. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8, though care should be taken to avoid heavily compacted urban clay or areas exposed to high soil salinity and road salt spray.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
