COLOR GUARD ADAMS NEEDLE YUCCA

Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard' is commonly referred to as Color Guard Yucca or Color Guard Adam's Needle. This showy ornamental evergreen shrub features rigid, sword-shaped, spine-tipped leaves that have green margins and striking creamy gold centers. In late spring a 5-8' tall flowering stalk rises from the center bearing a long terminal panicle of bell-shaped, fragrant, creamy white flowers that last for weeks. Propagation is easy with basal offsets that form throughout the growing season.

Color Guard Yucca thrives in average, well-drained soils in full sun. It is quite tolerant of poor soils, heat, drought and salt spray. It is ideal for dry slopes and garden areas and works well in containers.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in loose, well-draining, sandy or rocky soil, selecting a location that receives full sun. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in lean soil conditions and requires excellent drainage to prevent root issues, so avoid sites where water pools. Provide supplemental water during the first season to support root development but minimize moisture thereafter as the plant is highly adapted to dry environments. Prune spent flower stalks down to the base once they have finished blooming to maintain a tidy appearance. Apply a light layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, taking care to keep the material well away from the crown to prevent stem rot.
