HOMESTEAD PURPLE VERBENA

Verbena canadensis 'Homestead Purple' is a legendary perennial groundcover, renowned for its brilliant, deep violet-purple blooms and exceptional garden performance. Unlike many other Verbena cultivars, 'Homestead Purple' is celebrated for its hardiness and its vigorous, spreading growth habit, which creates a lush, flowering carpet that can quickly fill gaps in rock gardens, border edges, or containers. It provides a long-lasting, vibrant splash of color that is virtually unmatched in its intensity, and its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators from late spring through the heat of the summer.

For best results, place 'Homestead Purple' in a position that receives full, direct sun, which is crucial for maintaining its tight, mounded form and maximizing flower production. It thrives in heat and humidity, making it an excellent choice for challenging summer conditions; however, it requires excellent soil drainage to prevent crown rot, especially during cooler, wetter months. It is particularly striking when allowed to spill over the edge of a retaining wall or pathway, but it is equally successful in a well-draining garden bed, provided it is not crowded by other aggressive growers that might impede its necessary airflow.

Planting Tips

To help Verbena 'Homestead Purple' settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in a sunny, well-draining site, ensuring the soil is not overly rich or heavy, as this can encourage leggy growth and reduced flowering. Space plants approximately 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for their natural, low-spreading habit to establish without competition. Keep the soil moderately moist during the initial establishment phase, but once the plants have rooted, they demonstrate excellent drought tolerance and prefer to dry out between waterings. If the plant becomes straggly mid-season, a light trim will rejuvenate the foliage and encourage a fresh flush of blooms.
