Zone: 5INDIAN SUMMER BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia hirta 'Indian Summer' is a legendary, award-winning cultivar that has remained a landscape standard for decades due to its immense flower size and vigorous habit. An All-America Selections (AAS) winner, it produces massive blooms that can reach up to 6 to 9 inches in diameter, some of the largest in the species. The flowers feature a single or semi-double row of brilliant, golden-yellow ray petals surrounding a classic, dark chocolate-brown central cone. Reaching a stately height of 30 to 36 inches, it possesses a bold, upright architecture that makes it a premier choice for the back of the border or for creating high-impact mass plantings in larger commercial and residential spaces.
For the most successful display, 'Indian Summer' should be sited in full sun to provide the energy needed for its large-scale floral production and to maintain its sturdy, upright stems. It is highly adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, including heavy clay, provided the drainage is adequate; it is also notably heat and drought-tolerant once its root system is established. To prolong the flowering window and prevent the plant from leaning, deadhead the spent blooms regularly.
The main difference between Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia hirta is in its flower size. The hirta cultivars have fewer, but larger flowers. Also, the Rudbeckia hirta stands more upright than the R. fulgida.
