Zone: 6DWARF GREENSTRIPE BAMBOO
Pleioblastus viridistriatus, commonly known as Dwarf Greenstripe Bamboo or Dwarf Golden Bamboo, is a striking, low-growing variety prized for its showy, variegated foliage. As a member of the Aureo-striatus Series, Dwarf Golden Bamboo features slender, papery leaves heavily striped with vibrant golden-yellow and bright green, which can illuminate even the more shaded corners of a landscape. It typically reaches a height of 3 to 4 feet, maintaining a dense, bushy habit that works exceptionally well as a high-impact groundcover or a contrasting texture in a mixed border. While it is technically a running bamboo, its smaller stature makes it much easier to manage than its larger relatives, providing a lush, tropical aesthetic that remains surprisingly hardy.
For its ideal spot, Dwarf Golden Bamboo performs best in partial shade, as the intense afternoon sun sometimes scorch the delicate yellow variegation; however, too much deep shade may cause the golden hues to fade back to a solid green. It thrives in rich, moist, and well-drained soil, and it benefits greatly from being sheared to the ground in late winter or very early spring. This "mowing" encourages a fresh flush of the most brightly colored new growth and prevents the plant from looking ragged as the season progresses. Because it spreads via underground rhizomes, planting it in a contained area or using a root barrier is a smart way to keep its golden glow exactly where you want it.
