KANSAS PEONY
Paeonia 'Kansas' is widely considered the gold standard for red double peonies, having won the prestigious American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1957. This early-to-midseason bloomer produces massive, symmetrical double flowers in a brilliant, clear watermelon-red that remains vivid and resists fading even in the brightest sunlight. The blooms are exceptionally full and ruffled, often reaching 6 to 8 inches in diameter, and emit a mild, pleasant fragrance. Reaching a height of approximately 30 to 36 inches, it features lush, dark green foliage that provides a clean, ornamental backdrop for the garden long after the flowers have faded.
One of the standout features of 'Kansas' Peony is its exceptionally strong, woody stems, which are among the sturdiest of all herbaceous double peonies and rarely require staking. To ensure it reaches its full vibrant potential, it should be planted in full sun in rich, well-drained soil; like most peonies, it is a "heavy feeder" that benefits from a top-dressing of compost in early spring. When planting, it is vital to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to guarantee reliable flowering. Its reliable performance and non-fading color make it a premier choice for both professional cut flower production and home landscapes alike.
